Located a short seven mile drive south of Mandan, this fort has great historical significance in American history. It was from here that the ill-fated Seventh Calvalry and Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer rode out to their infamous battle against the Sioux at Little Big Horn. In addition to sightseeing at the reconstructed village, numerous other recreational opportunities abound. Camp Hancock State Historic Site preserves part of the military installation that was established as Camp Greeley in 1872 and aimed to protect Northern Pacific Railroad workers. The name of the camp was changed to Camp Hancock in 1873 and today features a log headquarters building that acts as a local history museum. Open May through mid-September. Address: 101 W. North Dakota State Capitol The North Dakota State Capitol is a 19-story building built in the Art Deco style. Built in 1933, the building showcases unique woods and other materials that were imported from other states and countries. Guided tours of the building are offered every day of the week.
